Nail Surgery
Toenails can become uncomfortable painful unmanageable and have infections if left untreated, after trauma, poor nail cutting, poor fitting shoes or toe deformities.
When Is It Time to Stop Cutting and Get Help?
A sore toenail can seem like a minor issue until it becomes a recurring problem that interferes with walking, working, or even sleeping. So how do you know when it’s time to seek professional care?
Signs You May Need Nail Surgery if
- The nail regularly grows into the skin
- Repeated infections or open wounds that will not heal
- Conservative care (like trimming or soaking in saline) doesn’t help
- Thick, distorted, or fungal nails causing discomfort
What Surgery Involves
The procedure is minor, done under local anesthetic. Best of all, it offers permanent solution for most patients.
Don’t Delay Help
Too many people suffer in silence or attempt repeated self-care. A single treatment may be all you need to put the problem behind you. We offer partial or full nail removal
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toe nails can be painful and debilitating and often due to the pain reduce the quality and frequency of daily activities.
Causes
- Poorly fitting footwear
- Wrong footwear for foot shape
- Trauma to toe/toenail
- Congenital
- Inappropriate or poor nail cutting (nail spike left)
- Picking toenails
If an ingrowing toenail is left untreated it may cause continuing discomfort and infection, the toe may become swollen, inflamed and very uncomfortable, your GP often recommends you to see a podiatrist. Not all ingrowing nails require surgery, we may be able to treat conservatively.
Verrucae
Verrucaes are warts that commonly occur on the soles of the feet, caused by the Human Papilloma virus which can be contagious through person to person contact.
Corn & Callus Removal
These are some of the most common treatments we deal with on a regular basis as well as nail cutting, if left untreated corns and callus can become painful and debilitating and have an impact on our daily life.
Corns and callus are caused by a number of reasons including friction and pressure. They can be the result of foot deformities, poor footwear, regular high impact activity, foot injuries or loss of natural padding under the foot.
Fungal Skin & Nail Conditions
Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis)
Athlete’s foot often starts between the toes and can spread to the sole and sides of the foot, the skin can become dry, itchy, scaly and peeling. Vesicular athlete’s foot is characterised by fluid filled blisters, often on the instep.
Toenail Fungus infection
Fungal infection of the toenails, the nails can become thick, discoloured, brittle, and may crumble, this can occur after trauma to the nail (injury), poor fitting footwear, or cross infection from the skin.
Thickened & Damaged Nails
If you have thickened or damaged toenails, we can help diagnose the possible cause and provide effective treatment for you.
Thickened or damaged toenails can result from a variety of causes, including:
- Fungal infections (onychomycosis)
- Trauma or injury to the nail
- Psoriasis or other skin conditions
- Poor circulation or diabetes
- Aging or long-term pressure from footwear
If the nail is thick or deformed, we can trim and thin the nail safely. This helps reduce pressure, pain, and prevents the nail from catching on socks or shoes.
If a fungal infection is present, we can prescribe topical anti-fungal medications and advise on proper foot hygiene and prevention methods
We also offer footwear advice if needed to help avoid further trauma.
Diabetic Foot Assessments & Foot Care
Foot checks are extremely important and offer several key benefits, especially for people with diabetes.
Regular foot assessment can catch early signs of nerve damage (neuropathy), poor circulation, or foot deformities before they become serious. Minor issues like blisters, calluses, or dry skin can quickly turn into ulcers if unnoticed in diabetic feet.
Diabetic assessment checks blood flow and sensation. Poor circulation and loss of sensation are warning signs that can indicate serious vascular or nerve issues.
Who Should Have Regular Foot Checks?
- More frequently if they have previous foot problems, neuropathy, or ulcers.
- Everyone with diabetes, at least once a year.
Foot Pain
Foot pain conditions including those related to injuries (sprains and fractures), chronic issues (plantar fascilitis and tendonitis) and structrual problems (bunions, flat feet, arthritis).
